I remember those days in primary school when we used to sing that poem of ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall…’
Well, I never knew the remaining lines…lol. I doubt you did or do either.
But I do remember the part that says ‘not all the King’s men and queen’s men could put him together again’.
Now I begin to wonder…what happened to Humpty?
Was he that heavy?
Or he had a very big head?
Was he sleeping?
Was the wall that high?
What was he looking for that was so important on the wall?
And so many other questions run through my mind.
There is a similar story like that in the Bible. A young man slept off and fell off some high building.
You remember that story right? The difference is just that, in the case of this young man, there was a remedy.
Let’s quickly look at the story.
Acts of the Apostles 20:9 (NLT) As Paul spoke on and on, a young man named Eutychus, sitting on the windowsill, became very drowsy. Finally, he fell sound asleep and dropped three stories to his death below.
The brother in that story didn’t suddenly fall asleep.
He started by being drowsy which eventually led to a deep sleep.
Did you notice how the scripture says ‘dropped to his death’?
It is more like saying ‘after the ground floor was death…non-negotiable’!
What am I trying to say today?
There is a craze to acquire so many things especially for young people these days, that we are falling asleep spiritually. So many ephemeral things are taking our attention.
Everybody wants to make quick money. Little wonder there are a lot of quick money making schemes out there.
As much as it is good to work diligently and be prosperous, there is a huge difference between ‘surviving’ and ‘thriving’. The former is a physical word while the latter is deeply spiritual. So while we should not be lazy, we should also not neglect our spiritual formation.
Don’t let the pressures of this world take away your intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
No matter how much you have achieved, you are not too big to need God.
I need God every moment of my life; I don’t know about you.
Not just because I need more results, but because He is the reason I exist in the first place.
Whatever I do should be traced back to God as my source.
Perhaps you are already feeling drowsy, this is a subtle reminder to come back to the place of fellowship with the Father. Not everyone will have a second chance like brother Eutychus.
Some of us are already on a ticking clock.
Please don’t postpone it.
Don’t fall like Mr Humpty!
No matter how good your ‘toasting’ skills are, if you are not spiritually sound, you will just be toasting bread!
No matter how brilliant you are, if God is not your source of wisdom, you do not deserve any accolades.
And in case you have fallen, there is still the God of restoration.
Quickly retrace your steps back to Him.
Sometimes, you might need the anointing of a spiritual head like Apostle Paul, to be restored.
Whatever way, just be in right standing with the Father!
May God help us.
