Defying The Goliath Of Your Marriage

Today, we’ll begin an in depth study of the book of 1Samuel Chapter 17.

This is probably one of the most popular stories of the Bible. It is the story of David, the Israelite and Goliath, the Philistine.

Challenges abound. At every stage of a man’s life, he is faced with different obstacles that look unsurmountable, thus putting him in a dilemma.

A whole nation of Israel was put in disarray and was being challenged by a single man (vs. 4-11). The Bible gave a frightening description of Goliath. Describing him as huge is an understatement.

Do you know that is exactly how situations and challenges of life present itself to us? They look so huge and weighty, thus we begin to fret and fidget as to how to escape and defeat them.

Even the way this challenge presents itself to us is so daunting.

And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.(1 Samuel 17:16)

But then, to overcome whatever Goliath in life and marriage, your David has to rise up early before it becomes overwhelming and be as undaunting and undismayed as you can in order to face your Goliath.

And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle (1 Samuel 17:20).

Goliath of marriage can present itself in various forms — difficult spouse, delays in childbirth, joblessness, spiritual attacks, unhappiness in marriage etc. The list is endless.

It is left for you to identify the Goliath that is defying you and apply the following principles in overcoming it.

1. Be bold.

…but the righteous are bold as a lion.(Proverbs 28:1b)

The first thing the enemy or a challenge does is to introduce fear in order to destabilize us so as to give him the right platform for attack.
As soon as Goliath arose, the men of Israel fled and became dreadfully afraid to surmount this Goliath.
Therefore, gird you loins, be bold and be ready to attack. It is in attacking that you overcome.

We will continue from here next time.

God is in the midst of me, I shall not be moved, God shall help me and that right early (Psalms 46:5)

Lord Jesus, empower me with boldness so that I can be able to face any Goliath that is challenging my life and marriage (Amen)

…but the righteous are bold as a lion.(Proverbs 28:1)

Eliminate every form of fear that is incapacitating you and begin to walk in boldness
