Healthy Marriage Attitudes Couples Should Imbibe

Our attitude can be explained as our settled way of thinking which in turn dictates what we do. Things that add up as strength or weakness in us are strongly linked to what we have allowed as residual thoughts regarding issues. The type of spouse we are can be revealed to us based on our settled way of thinking.

Prov. 4; 23 (KJV) Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Our marriage will always be in need of these truths regardless of how long or new our marriages are. This morning, we shall be looking at some attitudinal truths from the scriptures that can infuse health into our marriages.

1. Attitude of Thankfulness

1Thess 5:18 (KJV) in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Keeping an attitude of thankfulness will always be acceptable in the sight of God. If we really want to see the will of God at work in our marriage, then we must have it settled in our hearts and mind that we have to be thankful.

2. Attitude of Prayer and Watching

Col. 4:2 (KJV) Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.

The necessity of maintaining an attitude of prayer in marriage is of utmost importance. This is connected to the point above as thanksgiving is a necessary part of our prayer. Your marriage will always have needs only which God can meet, hence the need for prayer.

Let it be settled in your mind that prayer is not what should be done in troubled times alone but the fuel needed for your marriage to thrive and progress on a daily basis. In the same vein, watching is needful.

Have it settled in your mind that you will have to watch concerning your marriage. Watching entails looking out for things with the actual or potential capacity of causing breakdown to your marriage.

3. Attitude of Trust

Prov. 3:5 (KJV) Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Please hear! I am not saying you should not have plans for every facet of your marriage, but be informed that your plan is not a guarantee for the manifestation of what you desire, rather your trust in God’s ability is.

4. Attitude of Humility

Phil.2; 5-6 (KJV) Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

This scripture showed us that Christ was in the form of God but he did not ‘carry it on his head’ but made himself of no reputation. Put this thought in your mind that your stand in your marriage as the same with your spouse will always require you both not to allow your place to get into your head, never to allow your place to be used as an avenue of control over one another.

May health be infused into our marriages!

My marriage is healthy in the name of Jesus. We will not just go far, we will get to our ordained destination

I receive health in my marriage; my marriage will flourish in the name of Jesus

The health of your marriage is determined by your thoughts

Evaluate your thoughts concerning all issues raised and other areas of your marriage

Psalm 119: 100-120
