They are just very carnal.
The times have not been good for Sandy at all. Her powdered face is lined with frustrations and defeat arising from piles of unanswered prayers over the years.
Yet, Sandy has been a very religious girl. She has been “close” to God. She has spent most of her life serving God, and she kind of believe that a steady marital relationship will be a reward of all her efforts at serving God.
She just could not reconcile how much she loved God and yet God seems not to be loving her back, especially as it relates to God answering her several nights of vigils and personal prayers.
It’s kind of an enigma to her, a puzzle, a mystery to unravel.
George on the other hand is not far from similar frustrations and defeating experiences as well. What exactly is happening?
George thought deeply. His cogitations yielded no fruit. As he sat under the huge Mango tree in from of his rented house, the cool shade provided by the huge tree could not reach his soul.
He felt abandoned, in the scorched sun of unanswered prayers and God seems very far. As one of the leaves swam down through the air and landed at his feet, he wished that was his answered prayers coming down in physical reality and becoming a testimony.
What can be responsible for these frustrations? Why is Sandy and George so frustrated despite all their “service” unto God?
This morning, we will examine one thing that can hinder prayers from being answered.
We cannot exhaust everthing, but we will just look at an area this morning.
I have been doing a series on The Transformed Mind at Shouts of Grace Center, Ibadan, and it has been awesome.
So we begin with Romans 8:1
Romans 8:1 (KJV)
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
It is important to first establish that there is no condemnation, but then it’s only for those who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
So what does it mean to walk after the flesh and walk after the Spirit?
Verse 5 explains.
Romans 8:5 (AMPC)
For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit.
Walking after the flesh is setting your MIND on things which gratify or satisfy the flesh.
Walking after the Spirit is setting your MIND on things that gratify the Holy Spirit.
That is clear right?
Verse 6 tells us the result of walking after the flesh. You really don’t want to be there.
Romans 8:6 (KJV)
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
To be carnally minded is death! That should get you adjusted rightly!
Not just physical death, but like Amplified Bible puts it; [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter.
Death of favour, God’s blessings, opportunities, jobs, open doors and so on. Including death of a promising courtship!
Carnality or walking after the flesh will even result to death of prayers!
You might be the most hardworking brother of sister in church, but if you are carnal, a lot of things will die, including prayer points offered during several night of vigils and time spent on the “mountain!”
It can really be frustrating because that is exactly what the devil wants, to bring you to a place of blaming God whereas, a lot of what God wants to do are stopped by carnality!
Spending time with someone you are not married to and indulging in sexual stuffs is being carnal! It will kill a lot of good things.
Going to spend weekend with a boyfriend will kill a lot of things!
A lot of relationships today are ended because of carnality!
Let me conclude with this
Romans 8:7 (AMPC)
[That is] because the mind of the flesh [with its carnal thoughts and purposes] is hostile to God, for it does not submit itself to God’s Law; indeed it cannot.
This is what carnality is; slowing oneself down!
A carnal person, WITH CARNAL THOUGHTS AND PURPOSES (so we see this has a lot to do with the mind; thoughts) is hostile…note that.. is HOSTILE to God!
What does it mean to be hostile, as I conclude?
It means showing or feeling opposition or dislike; unfriendly. Synonyms include antagonistic, aggressive, confrontational, belligerent, bellicose, pugnacious, militant, truculent, combative, warlike; unfriendly, unkind, bitter, unsympathetic, malevolent, malicious, vicious, spiteful, rancorous, venomous, biting, wrathful, angry.
A carnal mind is all these to God? Yes!
So this is how it plays out.
On the outward, George and Sandy are good Christians who even pray a lot, but they are also unrepentantly carnal.
However, God does not look at the outward, He looks inward and each he looks at Sandy and George, He is met with hostility!
On the outward, they are praying, God bless me.
But their carnal mind is HOSTILE to God.
The mind, or the heart which is what God is dealing with is screaming to God, “Leave me alone! I don’t want you! Don’t bless me! And so on!
This is why a lot of prayers remain unanswered!
I will have to stop here now!
This is the message I taught yesterday in church! You can freely download the whole message and take time to listen more from our Telegram Group and Telegram Channel. The message will bless you!
I pray that God wil grant you more understanding!
God will enable you to live for Him. By the power of the Holy Spirit, you will live for Him. You will not be slowed down. Your prayers will not be hindered in Jesus name. You will see the travail of your heart indeed. Be blessed!
